Andhra Pradesh Forms Ministerial Panel to Regulate Social Media and Curb Misinformation

The Andhra Pradesh government has established a Group of Ministers (GoM) tasked with overseeing social media regulations and ensuring accountability of digital platforms in the state.

The committee comprises IT and HRD Minister Nara Lokesh, Health Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav, Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar, Housing and I&PR Minister Kolusu Parthasarathy, and Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha.

The GoM will undertake a comprehensive review of existing Indian laws, rules, and guidelines governing social media platforms and identify gaps in compliance, enforcement, and accountability. It will also examine international best practices, analyzing how other countries manage platform transparency, obligations, and user protection.

Key responsibilities of the committee include:

  • Recommending measures to hold social media platforms accountable for harmful content, misinformation, and online abuse.

  • Advising on strategies to safeguard citizen rights while maintaining national security.

  • Suggesting the creation or strengthening of nodal agencies to ensure continuous monitoring of digital platforms.

  • Coordinating across relevant departments and seeking expert assistance as required.

The Commissioner/Director of I&PR will act as the convener of the committee, overseeing the coordination of its proceedings and liaising with other government departments and stakeholders.

This move highlights Andhra Pradesh’s proactive approach to combating misinformation and enhancing accountability in the digital space, reflecting growing concerns about the impact of social media on public discourse and citizen welfare.
