Death of Black Student at Delta State University Sparks Federal Probe Calls

Federal Probe Demanded After Black Student Found Dead at Delta State University

A Black student, Demartravion "Trey" Reed, 21, was found dead hanging from a tree on the Delta State University campus in Cleveland, Mississippi, earlier this week. The discovery has prompted calls from civil rights advocates and lawmakers for a thorough federal investigation, despite authorities reporting no evidence of foul play.

Campus police chief Michael Peeler described Reed’s death as an “isolated incident” and assured that there was no ongoing threat to students or staff. The student was discovered near the pickleball courts on Monday morning.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, are involved in the ongoing investigation. The FBI stated it would step in if “information comes to light of a potential federal violation” during the local inquiry.

Official Findings and Autopsy

The local coroner reported no signs of physical assault prior to Reed’s death. Reed’s body has been sent to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for a formal autopsy, and further details will be released once the results are finalized.

Calls for Transparency

Civil rights advocates and Reed’s family are demanding full transparency. Citing Mississippi’s history of lynching and racially motivated violence, many argue that a federal review is necessary to ensure accountability. Mississippi Democratic US Representative Bennie Thompson has called for federal oversight, emphasizing the state’s painful past and the need to leave no stone unturned.

Family Retains Civil Rights Attorney

The family has hired Ben Crump, a prominent civil rights attorney, to ensure a transparent investigation. Crump stated on social media that the family “cannot accept vague conclusions when so many questions remain” and announced plans for an independent autopsy to obtain further clarity.

Delta State University, with an enrollment of over 2,600 students—more than 40% identifying as Black—confirmed cooperation with all relevant agencies and is providing support for students and staff during this period.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding Reed’s death, with local, state, and federal agencies contributing. Officials have reiterated there is no evidence of physical assault. Meanwhile, family and civil rights groups continue to advocate for transparency and accountability as the investigation unfolds.
