A Black student, Demartravion "Trey" Reed, 21, was found dead hanging from a tree on the Delta State University campus in Cleveland, Mississippi, earlier this week. Campus police chief Michael Peeler described Reed’s death as an “isolated incident” and assured that there was no ongoing threat to students or staff. The student was discovered near the pickleball courts on Monday morning.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, are involved in the ongoing investigation. The FBI stated it would step in if “information comes to light of a potential federal violation” during the local inquiry.

Official Findings and Autopsy

The local coroner reported no signs of physical assault prior to Reed’s death. Reed’s body has been sent to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for a formal autopsy, and further details will be released once the results are finalized.

Delta State University, with an enrollment of over 2,600 students—more than 40% identifying as Black—confirmed cooperation with all relevant agencies and is providing support for students and staff during this period.
