The Delhi government has inaugurated 10 new resource centres designed to support children with disabilities and special needs across government schools. The initiative aims to strengthen inclusive education through structured therapy programmes, enhanced supervision, and stringent safety measures.
According to the Directorate of Education (DoE), each centre will operate under a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to ensure consistency, safety, and transparency. The centres will act as dedicated hubs for therapeutic and psychological support, catering to students referred by their respective schools.
In a move to ensure accountability and child safety, all blocks within these centres are mandated to be equipped with CCTV cameras. This surveillance system will allow for continuous monitoring of therapy sessions and administrative activities, maintaining a secure environment for children.
Each centre will function six days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., remaining closed on gazetted holidays, second Saturdays, and Sundays. Heads of schools attached to these centres are responsible for overseeing daily operations, ensuring facility maintenance, and upholding safety standards.
The centres will offer multiple therapeutic interventions including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and clinical psychology. Individual therapy needs will be assessed and mapped by Special Education Teachers (SETs) before referring the child to the centre.
Each therapy session will last 45 minutes, with a maximum of eight sessions per child per day. The SOP outlines clear collaboration between SETs, centre coordinators, therapists, and psychologists to guarantee effective and personalised care.
Students attending therapy must be escorted by their SETs. In cases where SETs are unavailable, another teacher designated by the head of school will accompany the child, ensuring transparency and communication with parents.
The Directorate of Education has reiterated that any lapses in safety, sanitation, or service quality will be dealt with seriously. The SOP also emphasises collaboration between educators, therapists, and families to promote overall development and inclusion.
By combining structured therapy, CCTV-backed safety measures, and coordinated inter-departmental efforts, Delhi’s new centres mark a progressive step towards ensuring equitable access to quality education for special needs children.
This initiative reflects the city’s broader commitment to inclusive growth and child welfare in public education.
