Durgapur Case Update: Survivor’s Friend Arrested for Alleged Rape, Gang-Rape Ruled Out

In a major development in the Durgapur case, police have arrested the survivor’s male friend, who has been named the prime accused in the complaint filed by her father. The arrest took place on Tuesday evening after detailed questioning and review of the survivor’s statement.

According to officials, the survivor alleged that she was raped by her friend when she went out with him. This arrest marks the sixth detention linked to the incident, though investigators have now ruled out the possibility of gang-rape.

The accused will be produced before court on Wednesday morning, officials confirmed.

Police Statement on the Case

At a press briefing, Sunil Kumar Chowdhury, Commissioner of the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate, clarified that evidence and the survivor’s account both indicate that only one person committed the assault.

“As per the survivor’s own account and physical evidence, one person sexually assaulted her. We are investigating all angles and continuing to interrogate the arrested individuals,” Chowdhury said.

He further added that all six accused were present at different stages of the incident, as established through surveillance and witness accounts.

Evidence and Investigation Progress

Police have recovered the victim’s mobile phone and collected the clothing and physical appearance details of her friend. A crime scene reconstruction was conducted in the presence of the accused to verify the sequence of events.

Clothes belonging to one of the accused have been sent for forensic examination, and investigators are awaiting results from both the forensic and medical reports to determine further legal action.

Authorities have reiterated that the investigation remains ongoing and that every aspect of the case is being closely examined to ensure justice is served.
