EU Holds Urgent Talks After China Imposes Rare Earth Export Curbs

The European Union is set to hold urgent consultations with industries affected by China’s new restrictions on rare earth exports. Stephane Sejourne, the EU’s industry chief, will convene executives from sectors including automotive, defence, wind energy, chemicals, and mining processing via video link on Monday.

China, the world’s largest producer of rare earth minerals used to manufacture magnets crucial for electronics, automotive, and defence applications, recently announced tighter controls on the export of rare-earth technologies. These curbs have reportedly forced some European companies to halt production, causing significant economic repercussions.

Brussels is coordinating with G7 partners to respond to China’s measures. The EU talks aim to assess the impact on European industries and determine additional steps to mitigate disruptions, particularly for projects tied to European raw material sourcing.

Following the consultations, Sejourne is expected to provide an update to EU commissioners during the plenary session at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, on Tuesday.
