Free Meals and Therapy in Delhi Schools | MCD’s New Education Reforms

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has introduced a comprehensive outreach and welfare initiative to strengthen its education network, boost enrolment, and enhance inclusivity in government schools. The plan focuses on free facilities, improved accessibility, and dedicated support for children with disabilities across Delhi.

Currently, MCD schools cater to around 6.5 lakh students, but the corporation aims to increase this figure by at least one lakh in the coming academic cycle, said Yogesh Verma, Chairperson of the MCD Education Committee.

Outreach to Boost Enrolment

To counter the recent dip in enrolment, MCD has rolled out a Saturday outreach program where two teachers from each school will visit residential clusters and local neighbourhoods to spread awareness about the benefits of enrolling in MCD schools.

These benefits include:

  • Free mid-day meals ensuring child nutrition.

  • Free uniforms and stationery for all enrolled students.

  • A safe and inclusive learning environment.

To motivate teachers, the MCD is introducing a “Nigam Award”, which will recognise educators who make a significant impact on enrolment growth.

Therapy and Counselling for Children with Disabilities

In a parallel initiative, the Delhi government is expanding therapeutic and counselling services for children with disabilities studying in MCD and government schools.

Services offered will include:

  • Physiotherapy and occupational therapy to support physical development.

  • Speech therapy to improve communication abilities.

  • Psychological counselling by trained clinical psychologists.

These services will be available through 24 resource centres, including 10 newly inaugurated facilities under the government’s ‘Sewa Pakhwada’ campaign launched by Home Minister Amit Shah.

Comprehensive Support at Resource Centres

The newly developed centres are expected to serve over 12,500 children, providing access to:

  • Family counselling and parental guidance.

  • Sensory rooms and virtual reality therapy.

  • Formal assessments for better academic planning.

Each centre will function six days a week from 9 AM to 5 PM, even during school vacations. Every child will receive 45-minute therapy sessions, with up to eight sessions conducted daily, ensuring continuous and tailored care.

Schools have been instructed to ensure coordination between Special Education Teachers (SETs), Resource Centre Coordinators, and therapists for seamless implementation.

A Step Toward Inclusive Education

This dual reform—focusing on student enrolment and inclusive learning—reflects MCD’s broader vision of ensuring “Education for All” in Delhi. By offering free essentials, therapy, and recognition programs, the corporation hopes to build a more accessible and equitable education ecosystem.

Experts say these measures could significantly improve retention and performance in government schools, setting a model for inclusive education in India.
