In a shocking twist to the IPS officer Y Puran Kumar suicide case, a Haryana Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) has allegedly died by suicide, leaving behind a three-page note and a video message that levelled serious allegations of corruption and caste-based politics within the police department.
The deceased, ASI Sandeep Kumar, was posted with the Cyber Cell in Rohtak. His body was found near a tubewell along the Rohtak–Panipat road on Tuesday evening. Police recovered his suicide note and are examining the video message he recorded before his death.
In his final note, Sandeep Kumar accused late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar of corruption and misuse of power. “Y Puran Kumar was a corrupt officer. There is a lot of evidence against him,” the note stated. The ASI further wrote that he feared arrest in connection with the ongoing investigation and wanted to expose what he described as “a corrupt system.”
“I am sacrificing my life to demand an impartial probe. This corrupt family should not be spared,” he wrote, adding that Kumar had allegedly used caste politics to influence postings and shield himself from accountability.
In the video statement, the ASI claimed that corruption and caste bias had deeply infiltrated the department. He alleged that “officers were extorted, clerical mistakes were weaponised for harassment, and female officers were threatened with transfers and faced misconduct.”
Sources revealed that ASI Kumar was linked to the team investigating IPS officer Y Puran Kumar’s gunman, Sushil Kumar, though he was not directly handling the investigation.
The development follows the death of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who allegedly died by suicide on October 7 at his residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh. Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer serving as Inspector General at the Police Training Centre, Sunaria (Rohtak), reportedly shot himself with his service revolver.
A nine-page suicide note recovered from his pocket accused 12–13 officers, including senior IPS and IAS officials, of harassment, caste-based discrimination, and mental torture. One page of the note served as a will, bequeathing all his property to his wife, IAS officer Amneet Puran Kumar, who was on an official trip to Japan at the time of his death.
Kumar accused DGP Shatrujeet Kapur of deliberately obstructing his benefits, withdrawing his official vehicle, and making “casteist and factually incorrect remarks” in his appraisal report.
In his concluding note, Kumar wrote, “Having waited for sufficient time and with no response, I am left with no option but to take this extreme step. I hope and pray this animosity ends with me.”
Following the incident, Amneet Puran Kumar filed a complaint accusing DGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapur and former Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya of abetting her husband’s suicide. She claimed that her husband had suffered prolonged mental harassment and caste-based discrimination at the hands of senior officers.
An FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was registered against 13 officers. Subsequently, SP Narendra Bijarniya was removed from his post and replaced by SP Surendra Singh Bhoria.
The case has sparked political and social debate in Haryana, with Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini terming it a “tragic incident.” He assured that no one, however influential, will be spared if found guilty.
A six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by IG Pushpendra Kumar has been constituted by Chandigarh Police to investigate both the IPS officer’s and ASI’s deaths.
Meanwhile, SP Surendra Singh Bhoria described ASI Sandeep Kumar as “an honest and hardworking officer.” He added, “A forensic team has been called to the scene, and all aspects of the case are being examined.”
The fresh allegations and suicide note by ASI Sandeep Kumar are expected to complicate the ongoing investigation into the high-profile IPS officer’s death further.
