North Korea Submarine Development Backed by Russia: Seoul Reports Military Aid

North Korea is reportedly receiving technical assistance from Russia in its efforts to develop submarines capable of launching ballistic missiles (SLBMs), South Korea’s Defence Minister Ahn Gyu-back stated in parliament. While Pyongyang has test-fired ballistic missiles from submerged platforms, it remains unclear whether it has successfully achieved a full SLBM launch from an operational submarine.

The North is also pursuing nuclear-powered submarine technology, signaling a major leap in its naval capabilities. Minister Ahn confirmed that Pyongyang has been acquiring “various technologies” to support its submarine development but cautioned that it is too early to verify an actual SLBM launch from a submarine.

Over the past two years, military cooperation between North Korea and Russia has intensified. According to South Korean intelligence, Pyongyang deployed over 10,000 troops to fight in the Ukraine conflict, receiving economic and military technology assistance in return. Analysts say these developments highlight the growing strategic partnership between Pyongyang and Moscow, raising regional security concerns in East Asia.
