Pakistan Moves to Ban TLP, Freeze Accounts and Block Social Media Amid Violence

Punjab’s government has taken decisive steps against Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), recommending a federal ban on the Islamist party, describing it as an “extremist outfit”. The decision comes after violent clashes in Muridke and Lahore, where security forces and TLP protesters faced off, leaving multiple casualties.

The measures include:

  • Seizing all TLP properties and assets

  • Freezing the party’s bank accounts

  • Blocking TLP posters, banners, and social media accounts

  • Placing party leaders under the Fourth Schedule of the Anti-Terrorism Act

The crackdown, chaired by Maryam Nawaz, is the toughest action yet against TLP, which has previously received backing from elements within the establishment. Authorities have also targeted undocumented Afghans and illegal arms as part of the operation.

TLP’s violent protests, initially sparked by Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, escalated between October 9–11. Security forces used tear gas, baton charges, and advanced weapons, while TLP supporters retaliated with stones, petrol bombs, and firing. Reports suggest casualties on both sides, though the actual toll may be higher than official figures.

Party chief Saad Hussain Rizvi encouraged protesters to embrace martyrdom, while the government has emphasized it will not tolerate violence or coercion. Around 170 TLP members have been detained, and mobile data services have been partially restored in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

The move signals Pakistan’s determination to curb extremist political movements and maintain public order amid growing unrest.
