Shehbaz Sharif Hails Trump at Egypt Summit, Credits Him for Halting India-Pakistan Conflict

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif lauded US President Donald Trump at the Sharm el-Sheikh Summit on Gaza, backing his claim of mediating peace between India and Pakistan. Sharif described Trump as "a man of peace" and formally endorsed him for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in halting a potential nuclear conflict.

The exchange unfolded when Trump, during his address, invited Sharif to speak before world leaders. “Do you want to say something?” Trump asked, gesturing toward the Pakistani leader. Sharif praised Trump for his diplomatic efforts, highlighting his commitment to preventing wars and fostering peace worldwide.

Sharif Endorses Trump for Nobel Peace Prize

Addressing the summit, Sharif stated:
"Today is one of the greatest days in contemporary history because peace has been achieved after untiring efforts led by President Trump, who is genuinely a man of peace."

Sharif added that Trump and his team had worked tirelessly to prevent escalation between India and Pakistan, crediting them with averting a potential nuclear war. “Had it not been for this gentleman… the war could’ve escalated to a level where no one would have lived to tell what happened,” he said.

He went on to formally nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, calling him “the most genuine and the most wonderful candidate” for the honour.

Trump’s Humorous Response

Trump, returning to the podium, responded with humour:
"Wow! I didn’t expect that. Let’s go home — there’s nothing more I have to say. Goodbye everybody."
His remarks drew laughter from the audience, which included leaders from nearly three dozen countries.

Context on India-Pakistan Ceasefire

Since May 10, Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for mediating a “full and immediate” ceasefire between India and Pakistan after four days of intense drone and missile exchanges. India maintains that the cessation of hostilities was achieved through direct talks between the military chiefs (DGMO-level discussions).

At the summit, Trump also praised Prime Minister Modi, calling India “a great country with a very good friend at the top” and expressing optimism that Pakistan and India “are going to live very nicely together.”

Global Peace Efforts

Alongside Trump, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani signed a document intended to guide Gaza’s future, although the full text has not been released.

Pakistan Says:
"Pakistan has nominated President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his extraordinary efforts to first stop the war between India and Pakistan and then achieve a ceasefire, along with his very wonderful team."

India Says:
"India has consistently maintained that the understanding on cessation of hostilities with Pakistan was reached following direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMO)."
