Shreyas Iyer Injury Update: Getting Better Every Day After Spleen Injury Horror

India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has shared a heartfelt update on his recovery journey following a serious spleen injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. The 29-year-old cricketer, who was admitted to the ICU due to internal bleeding from a spleen laceration, reassured fans that he is steadily regaining strength and appreciates their overwhelming support.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Iyer wrote, “I’m currently in the recovery process and getting better, every passing day. I’m deeply grateful to see all the kind wishes and support I’ve received — it truly means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts.”

The injury occurred when Iyer attempted a difficult running catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s delivery. Though he initially appeared fine, his condition deteriorated soon after, prompting emergency hospitalisation. Scans revealed internal bleeding and a spleen laceration, leading to ICU admission for close observation.

In an official statement, the BCCI confirmed that Iyer’s condition has stabilised. “The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested. His condition is now stable and continues to improve. The BCCI medical team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, will keep monitoring his progress,” the statement said.

India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav also addressed Iyer’s condition before the Australia series opener in Canberra, expressing relief that his teammate was on the mend. “When we saw it, it looked normal, but later we were told it was serious. Thankfully, now he’s talking normally and recovering well,” Suryakumar said, calling Iyer’s incident “a rare setback for a rare talent.”

Medical experts note that a spleen injury typically requires 6–12 weeks of rest to heal completely, during which players are advised to avoid physical impact or strenuous activity to prevent re-bleeding.

While Iyer’s recovery progress is promising, he is set to miss India’s upcoming ODI series against South Africa in November–December, and his participation in the New Zealand series in early 2026 remains uncertain.

Fans across social media have flooded Iyer’s post with messages of support, hailing his fighting spirit and wishing him a speedy return to the field.
