Sunny Sanskari Box Office Day 6: Varun Dhawan-Janhvi Kapoor Film Struggles to Touch ₹40 Crore

Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor’s ‘Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari’ continues to face a tough time at the box office. The Shashank Khaitan-directed romantic comedy, produced by Dharma Productions, has seen a sharp decline in collections since its opening weekend.

According to early trade estimates, the film collected around ₹3 crore on Day 6 (Tuesday), taking its total to ₹36.25 crore. Despite a strong marketing push and festive release timing, the film is struggling to reach the ₹40 crore mark.

Kantara Chapter 1 Overshadows Sunny Sanskari

The film’s performance has been severely impacted by the phenomenal success of Rishab Shetty’s ‘Kantara: Chapter 1’, which has turned into a box office juggernaut.

Shetty’s epic action drama has reportedly collected ₹290 crore in six days, nearly eight times higher than Khaitan’s romantic offering.

While ‘Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari’ was initially released across 3,021 screens, that number has now dropped to 2,802. In contrast, ‘Kantara Chapter 1’ continues to dominate with 7,887 screenings nationwide across five languages — Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam.

Production Budgets and Market Outlook

‘Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari’ is estimated to have been made on a ₹80 crore budget, while ‘Kantara Chapter 1’ cost nearly ₹150 crore to produce. Despite its smaller scale, the romantic comedy was expected to perform well due to its family-friendly tone and lead pair’s popularity.

However, strong word-of-mouth for ‘Kantara’ and limited audience interest in light-hearted dramas post-pandemic seem to have affected its prospects.

Varun Dhawan’s Box Office Track Record

For Varun Dhawan, this film comes at a crucial phase in his career. His last major box office success was ‘Sui Dhaaga’ (2018), which earned ₹125 crore worldwide on a modest budget. Since then, titles like ‘Kalank,’ ‘Street Dancer 3D,’ and ‘Coolie No. 1’ have failed to meet expectations.

Trade experts note that ‘Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari’ was expected to help Dhawan regain his footing in the romantic-comedy space, a genre he once ruled with hits like Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and Badrinath Ki Dulhania.

About the Film

Set against a lavish wedding backdrop, ‘Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari’ tells a light-hearted love story blending humor, tradition, and emotional chaos. Apart from Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor, the film also stars Sanya Malhotra, Rohit Saraf, and Maniesh Paul in key roles.

Directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, the film was marketed as a family entertainer but has struggled to find momentum amid stiff competition.

The Road Ahead

With ‘Kantara Chapter 1’ continuing its dream run and multiple festive releases lined up, the coming weekend will be crucial for ‘Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari’ to recover costs. Trade analysts predict a slow climb, noting that crossing even the ₹50 crore mark may prove difficult unless a strong turnaround occurs through positive word-of-mouth.
