US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that a Supreme Court victory in the upcoming legal battle over his sweeping global tariffs would transform the United States into “by far the richest country anywhere in the world,” while granting Washington unprecedented leverage in trade negotiations.
“If we win the Supreme Court case, which is the finalisation of tariffs, we will be by far the richest country anywhere in the world. We’ll have tremendous power to negotiate. By using tariffs, I settled seven wars. Four of them were because I was able to do tariffs,” Trump told reporters before departing for the United Kingdom.
The Supreme Court is set to hear arguments in November on whether Trump exceeded his constitutional authority when imposing tariffs on imports from China, India, and several other countries. Lower courts previously ruled that Congress — not the president — holds the power to regulate tariffs, though a divided appeals court allowed the measures to remain in place pending the final decision.
Small businesses and state governments have argued that the tariffs inflicted severe financial harm, with some nearly bankrupted. “Congress, not the President alone, has the power to impose tariffs,” said Jeffrey Schwab, attorney for the Liberty Justice Center, which is leading the legal challenge.
Despite these challenges, Trump’s administration has urged the justices to move quickly, warning that removing the tariffs now could put the U.S. “on the brink of economic catastrophe.”
Trump has consistently defended tariffs as both an economic safeguard and a tool of foreign policy, framing them as central to his trade strategy. The upcoming ruling, expected to be one of the most consequential trade decisions in decades, could redefine the scope of presidential power over global commerce.
