Syed Kirmani Criticises Politics Intruding Into Cricket During Asia Cup 2025

Former India wicketkeeper and 1983 World Cup winner Syed Kirmani has expressed deep disappointment over the increasing politicisation of cricket, particularly during the Asia Cup 2025. Speaking to ANI, Kirmani condemned the provocative gestures and political undertones that overshadowed on-field performances, calling the developments “disgusting” and a departure from the gentlemanly spirit of his era.

Kirmani specifically criticised incidents during the India–Pakistan encounters, where players engaged in provocative gestures referencing recent cross-border tensions. The Asia Cup, which saw India lift the title under Suryakumar Yadav, attracted more attention for off-field controversies than cricketing excellence.

The former wicketkeeper recalled a time when India–Pakistan matches were fiercely competitive yet conducted with respect and camaraderie. “Whatever has transpired away from the sporting field, leave it there. Don’t relate it to your winnings or achievements,” he said, lamenting the stark contrast to the hospitality and mutual respect of earlier decades.

Controversies on the Field

The tension between the two sides escalated after the Pahalgam terror attack in May and subsequent diplomatic strains. During the Asia Cup, Indian players refrained from shaking hands with Pakistan counterparts at the toss and post-match ceremonies. Pakistani players responded with on-field antics, including gestures by Haris Rauf and Sahibzada Farhan, prompting reactions from Indian players and fines from the International Cricket Council for actions deemed politically charged.

The controversy peaked during the final, when India refused to accept the Asia Cup trophy from ACC chief Mohsin Naqvi, who also chairs the Pakistan Cricket Board and is a senior government minister. Naqvi walked away with the trophy, denying India the opportunity to celebrate their victory on stage.

A Call for Sporting Spirit

Kirmani urged modern cricketers to separate politics from sport. “Don’t dedicate victories to political causes. Cricket is a great game, and its essence lies in playing with integrity and sportsmanship,” he emphasised. He noted that the transformation of cricket from his era to today’s environment is “absolutely depressing,” a sentiment echoed by fans and former players alike.

The Asia Cup 2025 incidents highlight a growing trend where geopolitics and on-field conduct intersect, often overshadowing skill and competition. Kirmani’s plea serves as a reminder of the value of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and respect, principles that built the legacy of Indian cricket.
