Trump Dances on Red Carpet in Malaysia Ahead of ASEAN Summit

US President Donald Trump made a lively entrance in Malaysia on Sunday, delighting onlookers by dancing to the tune of Hawaii Five-O upon his arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Greeted with full military honours, a Malaysian fighter jet escort, and a sea of US and Malaysian flags, Trump joined the welcome ceremony in his signature style. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, along with senior officials, personally received the American leader on the tarmac.

The surprise moment came when Trump joined traditional Malaysian dancers near the red carpet, waving his arms to the rhythm, smiling broadly, and even taking small flags from the audience before posing for photos. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim appeared to join in the fun, eliciting cheers from the crowd.

After the impromptu dance, Trump proceeded to the ASEAN summit venue with Anwar Ibrahim. This visit marks the first stop of Trump’s multi-nation Asian tour, which aims to strengthen US engagement in the region and revive trade talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. During his Malaysia stop, Trump is scheduled to sign a bilateral trade deal with Malaysia and attend the ASEAN summit, a meeting he previously skipped during his first presidential term. Additionally, he is expected to meet Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on the sidelines of the summit.

Earlier, on a refuelling stop in Qatar, Trump met Gulf leaders, who are key guarantors of the Gaza ceasefire brokered by the US. Looking ahead, his Asian tour includes meetings in Japan with new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and in South Korea with Xi Jinping to address ongoing trade tensions. There is also a potential meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, which remains under consideration. South Korea’s reunification minister indicated a “considerable” chance of the encounter, and Kim has expressed willingness contingent on Washington easing its denuclearisation stance.

Trump’s arrival in Malaysia and his playful red-carpet dance underscored the blend of diplomacy and theatrics that has characterized much of his political persona. Beyond the lighthearted moments, the trip holds significant geopolitical weight, with multiple trade deals and high-level discussions shaping the future of US relations in Asia.
