Trump Imposes 100% Tariff on Drugs, Threatening India’s Pharma Exports

US President Donald Trump announced a new set of sweeping tariffs on Thursday, including a 100 per cent tax on imported pharmaceutical drugs, putting India’s pharmaceutical exports at significant risk. Speaking on Truth Social, Trump stated, “I’m putting a 100 per cent import tax on pharmaceutical drugs unless the companies are building plants right here in the United States. Breaking ground, under construction, that’s the deal. No exceptions.”

The tariff package, effective from October 1, also includes a 50 per cent import tax on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, 30 per cent on upholstered furniture, and 25 per cent on heavy trucks. Trump justified the measures by claiming foreign producers were undercutting US manufacturers, emphasizing that tariffs are necessary for national security and to protect American jobs.

Economists and trade experts have warned that such tariffs could increase inflation, create economic uncertainty, and raise costs for American consumers. Critics argue that the strategy may not benefit the US economy as intended and could strain international trade relations, particularly affecting countries like India that export significant volumes of pharmaceuticals to the United States.

Trump, however, dismissed these concerns, insisting that domestic manufacturing must be prioritized: “We’re protecting American jobs, we’re protecting American factories. It’s very simple. If you want to sell here, you build here.”

The announcement follows earlier trade policies aimed at boosting domestic production, but it underscores potential challenges for global supply chains and international businesses seeking access to the US market.
