Trump Says UK PM Starmer Agreed to Stop Buying Russian Oil, Support Sanctions

US President Donald Trump claimed that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed embarrassment over European countries continuing to purchase oil from Russia and has agreed to halt imports while supporting sanctions.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Thursday while returning from his historic state visit to the UK, Trump said Starmer was “a little bit embarrassed” by the continued Russian oil purchases by NATO and EU countries. Trump added that Starmer acknowledged the situation was “not good” and assured that the UK would align with efforts to impose sanctions on Russia.

Last week, Trump had issued an ultimatum to NATO nations to stop buying Russian oil, warning that continued purchases would undermine the bloc’s negotiating position. He emphasized that he was ready to implement major sanctions on Russia once all NATO countries commit to stopping imports and imposing coordinated measures.

“The UK Prime Minister was embarrassed that I caught Europe, you know, NATO countries, EU countries… buying oil from Russia,” Trump said. “I appreciate it that he said that,” adding that the UK is not among the countries continuing Russian oil imports.

Trump urged NATO’s 27-member alliance to act collectively, stating, “I am ready to ‘go’ when you are. Just say when,” underlining his push for unified sanctions against Russia.
