Xi Jinping Urges Fair World Order, Rejects Hegemonism at SCO Summit Amid US Tariff Pressure

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday called for an equitable global order and denounced hegemonistic policies, signaling a collective stance against unilateralism during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin.

Addressing leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Xi said, “We uphold justice and fairness and oppose hegemony and power politics.” He emphasized that SCO nations should act as partners rather than rivals, fostering cooperation instead of confrontation.

China introduced two major proposals during the summit — the establishment of an SCO Development Bank and the creation of a security coordination center to jointly address regional threats.

The summit featured a high-profile meeting between the leaders of Russia, India, and China, a grouping informally referred to as the RIC movement. Former diplomat Ambassador Anil Trigunayath described this alignment as a “non-Western alternative to the prevailing global order, rather than an anti-Western bloc.”

Discussions also touched upon India’s trade concerns, particularly its widening deficit with China, and the ongoing issue of cross-border terrorism.

In addition, SCO members are expected to finalize a decade-long development strategy, aiming to enhance regional connectivity, security, and economic growth amid growing US tariff threats targeting several member nations.
