Tensions escalated in Noida as workers demanding higher wages took to the streets, leading to clashes with police and incidents of stone-pelting. What initially appeared to be a spontaneous protest is now being investigated as a potentially coordinated effort.
Authorities confirmed that the situation intensified across multiple locations, prompting heavy police deployment to maintain law and order. Despite the unrest, officials stated that the situation is currently under control.
Investigations have uncovered alarming digital evidence suggesting that the protests may have been pre-planned. Social media chats and audio messages reportedly encouraged participants to bring chilli powder to counter police action.
Messages circulating online allegedly advised protesters against carrying sticks and instead recommended using chilli powder during confrontations. These revelations have raised serious concerns about the level of coordination and intent behind the protests.
Police officials revealed that multiple WhatsApp groups were created using QR codes to mobilise workers rapidly. These groups, along with suspected fake social media profiles, were used to spread messages and incite participation.
Authorities are also examining a possible “call centre-like” setup that may have been used to coordinate activities and amplify unrest. CCTV footage has shown masked individuals allegedly involved in violence and arson, further strengthening the suspicion of organised involvement.
So far, 396 individuals have been arrested in connection with the violence. The crackdown is ongoing, with police identifying more suspects through digital evidence and surveillance footage.
Seven FIRs have been registered, and raids are being conducted to track down those involved. Officials emphasised that strict action will be taken against anyone found participating in or instigating violence.
The Uttar Pradesh government clarified that viral claims about a ₹20,000 minimum wage are false and misleading. However, it confirmed that interim wage increases have been implemented from April 1, 2026, considering inflation and worker demands.
A Wage Board is expected to be formed soon to determine future wage structures, while the Centre is working on a national “floor wage” policy.
Officials also warned against spreading misinformation, stating that strict legal action will be taken against those sharing fake news or attempting to create panic.
Senior officials indicated that external elements may have infiltrated the protests, with some individuals allegedly having motives unrelated to workers’ welfare. These elements are currently under close monitoring.
The developments have also triggered political reactions, with leaders raising concerns about workers’ conditions and the broader economic situation.
While authorities have assured that the situation is now peaceful, the incident has highlighted the growing role of digital platforms in mobilising large-scale protests.
The focus now remains on restoring normalcy, addressing worker grievances, and preventing the spread of misinformation that could trigger further unrest.
