PM Modi Urges Indians to Choose Swadeshi, Wed in India and Avoid Unnecessary Gold Purchases

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has renewed his appeal to Indians to embrace the idea of “Swadeshi” by choosing Indian products and services and avoiding unnecessary spending on gold and overseas celebrations.

Addressing Gen Z through Instagram, Modi encouraged people to follow the messages of “Vocal for Local” and “Wed in India”. He urged Indians to consider hosting weddings within the country instead of travelling abroad for destination weddings and to avoid unnecessary purchases of gold.

The Prime Minister said such choices could contribute to India's economic self-reliance by keeping more spending within the domestic economy. He linked the appeal to the broader goal of strengthening India's ability to rely on its own production and businesses.

Modi also pointed to India's economic performance amid continuing global uncertainty. He highlighted GDP growth of 7.8 per cent in the first quarter of 2026-27, despite challenges including geopolitical conflicts and disruptions to global supply chains.

According to the Prime Minister, greater emphasis on domestic products, services and businesses can help create stronger economic opportunities for the country's younger generation.

The appeal also included a focus on India's growing domestic tourism and wedding industry. By choosing Indian destinations for weddings and other celebrations, consumers can support local businesses and service providers across sectors such as hospitality, tourism, food, transport and event management.

Modi said the wider objective of the Swadeshi approach is to strengthen India's self-reliance and help the country move towards becoming a developed nation by the centenary of Independence.

The renewed message places young Indians, particularly Gen Z, at the centre of the push for greater domestic consumption and self-reliance. The Prime Minister suggested that individual purchasing and lifestyle decisions can collectively contribute to India's economic ambitions.
