Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has raised serious concerns over the health of its jailed founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan, warning that he could suffer permanent loss of eyesight if he does not receive immediate and specialised medical treatment. The party said reports suggest Khan has been diagnosed with a critical eye condition while in custody, triggering alarm among supporters and human rights advocates.
In a public statement, the party cited media reports indicating that Khan has been diagnosed with central retinal vein occlusion in his right eye. The condition involves a blockage of the retinal vein, restricting blood flow and potentially causing severe and irreversible damage to vision if not treated urgently. PTI said medical experts who reportedly examined Khan in jail described the condition as highly sensitive and time-critical.
According to the party, specialists have advised that proper treatment would require advanced medical facilities, including access to an operation theatre and specialised ophthalmic equipment. PTI alleged that despite this advice, prison authorities are insisting on providing treatment within Adiala jail, where such facilities are not available. The party has demanded that Khan be transferred immediately to a hospital of his choice for treatment under qualified specialists.
PTI also called for unrestricted access for Khan’s family and close associates, arguing that transparency around his medical condition is essential. The party said Khan last met his personal physician in October 2024 and has not been allowed a comprehensive medical examination since then, despite existing legal directives.
The party further alleged that orders from the Islamabad High Court regarding Khan’s medical care have not been implemented. It claimed that a petition seeking regular medical check-ups has been pending since August 2025 without resolution. Describing the situation as a violation of fundamental human rights, PTI accused the authorities of prioritising political considerations over the health and safety of a prisoner.
“This is a gross breach of court orders and basic human rights,” the party said, adding that denying adequate medical care could have life-altering consequences. PTI reiterated its demand that Khan be shifted to Shaukat Khanum Hospital or another medical facility selected by his family.
Meanwhile, members of Khan’s family expressed confusion and concern over the reports. His sisters gathered outside Adiala jail, questioning why they had not been formally informed of any serious medical diagnosis. They said the family had received no official communication from jail authorities regarding Khan’s eye condition.
One of Khan’s sisters said that if such a diagnosis existed, the family should have been immediately notified to facilitate treatment. Another questioned how medical information had entered the public domain without being shared with the family or legal team, seeking clarity from the authorities.
PTI later alleged that one of Khan’s sisters was stopped by police while returning from the jail, a claim echoed by opposition groups who demanded accountability and immediate access for the family. The broader opposition alliance has called the handling of Khan’s health a matter of grave concern and urged authorities to comply with legal and humanitarian obligations.
Separately, PTI lawmakers approached the Islamabad High Court with a fresh petition seeking permission to meet Khan, stating that access to a prisoner is a legal right. Party leaders also expressed concern about the health of Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi.
In a related judicial development, a district court extended interim bail to Khan in several cases linked to the events of May 9 and to Bushra Bibi in a separate matter, after Khan could not be produced before the court due to his detention. The hearings have been adjourned until February 6.
