In a significant boost to India-US defence cooperation, the United States has approved a proposed sustainment and support package worth approximately $482.2 million for India's fleet of Apache attack helicopters and M777A2 ultra-light howitzers.
The proposal was formally notified by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), which manages the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme. The package is aimed at ensuring the long-term operational readiness, maintenance, and support of critical military platforms currently used by the Indian Armed Forces.
The move highlights the growing strategic and defence partnership between India and the United States amid evolving regional security challenges.
The support package focuses on sustainment services rather than the purchase of new weapons systems.
According to officials, the proposal includes maintenance support, spare parts, logistics assistance, training, technical services, software support, and other resources necessary for the continued operation of Apache helicopters and M777A2 howitzers.
Such sustainment agreements play a crucial role in ensuring that advanced military equipment remains operational and combat-ready throughout its service life.
India operates the Boeing AH-64 Apache, one of the world's most advanced attack helicopter platforms.
The Apache fleet provides significant capabilities in precision strike missions, battlefield support, reconnaissance, and anti-armour operations. The helicopters are equipped with advanced sensors, targeting systems, and weapon platforms that enhance the Indian military's operational effectiveness.
The approved package is expected to help maintain fleet readiness and support future operational requirements.
The package also covers the M777A2 Howitzer, a lightweight artillery system used by the Indian Army.
The M777 howitzer is particularly valued for its mobility and ability to operate in mountainous and high-altitude terrain. Its deployment has strengthened India's artillery capabilities, especially in strategically sensitive border regions.
Maintenance, spare components, and technical support will help ensure the artillery systems remain available for operational use.
The proposed sale reflects the continued expansion of defence cooperation between India and the United States.
Over the past decade, defence ties between the two countries have grown significantly through military purchases, joint exercises, intelligence sharing, technology cooperation, and strategic agreements.
India has emerged as one of the largest international operators of several US-made defence platforms, making long-term support arrangements increasingly important.
The Defence Security Cooperation Agency issued the notification after the US State Department approved the potential sale and informed Congress as part of the Foreign Military Sales process.
Such notifications are a standard requirement for major defence-related transactions involving partner countries. The process ensures transparency and provides Congress with an opportunity to review proposed military sales and support agreements.
The notification does not necessarily indicate immediate implementation but represents an important step in the approval process.
Military experts note that sustainment packages are often as important as the original procurement contracts.
Advanced defence platforms require regular maintenance, technical upgrades, spare parts, and specialized support to maintain peak performance. Without such arrangements, operational availability can decline over time.
The proposed package is expected to help India maintain readiness levels for two critical components of its military arsenal.
The latest proposal comes amid broader efforts by India and the United States to deepen strategic cooperation across defence, technology, maritime security, and regional stability initiatives.
As geopolitical competition intensifies across the Indo-Pacific region, both nations continue to view defence collaboration as a key pillar of their growing partnership.
The proposed $482.2 million support package reinforces that trajectory while ensuring India's Apache helicopters and M777 howitzers remain mission-ready for years to come.
