2,900 Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh a Grave Concern: MEA’s Randhir Jaiswal

India on Friday issued a strong diplomatic condemnation of continued violence against minorities in Bangladesh, describing the situation as one of “unremitting hostility” and a matter of serious concern. The remarks came amid growing reports of targeted attacks on Hindus under Bangladesh’s interim administration.

Addressing a press briefing, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal cited independent documentation indicating that more than 2,900 incidents of violence against minorities have occurred during the interim government’s tenure. These incidents include killings, arson attacks, forced land seizures and mob violence, he said.

Jaiswal referred specifically to the recent lynching of a Hindu youth in Mymensingh, calling it a “gruesome killing” and demanding that those responsible be swiftly identified and brought to justice. He stressed that the scale and consistency of the reported attacks rule out any attempt to dismiss them as exaggerated or isolated incidents.

“These acts of violence cannot be brushed aside as mere media exaggerations,” Jaiswal said, adding that New Delhi expects the authorities in Bangladesh to uphold the rule of law and ensure the safety and rights of minority communities.

Political reactions and regional implications

The MEA’s statement has resonated across political circles in India. West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari warned that continued violence across the border could have spillover effects, calling for heightened vigilance and self-protection measures.

Opposition leaders, however, drew comparisons with domestic law-and-order challenges, urging a broader and consistent approach to minority safety both within India and in the region.

The remarks come amid sustained unrest in Bangladesh, where incidents of mob violence, blasphemy-linked attacks and assaults on cultural events have raised international alarm. India has reiterated that respect for pluralism, minority protection and accountability are essential for regional stability and bilateral relations.
