AAP Sarpanch Shot Dead at Wedding in Amritsar; CCTV Captures Brazen Attack

A wedding celebration in Amritsar turned into a scene of horror after an Aam Aadmi Party-affiliated sarpanch was shot dead in front of guests, with the entire incident captured on CCTV. The brazen killing has once again raised serious concerns over political violence and law-and-order challenges in Punjab.

The victim has been identified as Jarmal Singh, a sarpanch from Tarn Taran district. The shooting occurred on Sunday during a wedding ceremony at a resort in Amritsar, where Singh was seated among other guests.

CCTV Footage Shows Execution-Style Shooting

Newly surfaced CCTV footage shows two unidentified men calmly entering the wedding venue. The visuals reveal them walking towards Singh, who appeared unaware of any threat. Moments later, one of the attackers pulled out a firearm and shot Singh from behind at close range.

Singh collapsed immediately after being hit, while the attackers fled the venue within seconds. Eyewitnesses said panic gripped the gathering as guests scrambled for cover after at least two gunshots were heard. What had moments earlier been a festive event quickly descended into chaos.

Victim Had Survived Previous Attacks

Police confirmed that Singh had survived at least three earlier attempts on his life. All previous incidents had been officially recorded with the local police in Tarn Taran. Investigators are now examining whether Sunday’s attack was linked to earlier threats, political rivalry or personal enmity.

After the shooting, Singh was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Despite medical intervention, he later succumbed to his injuries.

Police Launch Manhunt

Senior police officials confirmed that a full-scale investigation is underway. Punjab Police have begun analysing CCTV footage from the wedding venue and surrounding areas to identify the assailants and trace their escape route.

A senior police officer said the attack took place while the wedding function was in progress and that investigators are examining all possible angles, including political motives, past enmities and organised crime links. Security has been tightened across the area as part of the ongoing manhunt.

Forensic teams have also collected ballistic evidence from the scene, while statements from wedding guests and staff are being recorded to reconstruct the sequence of events.

Political and Public Reaction

The killing has sparked concern among political circles, particularly within the Aam Aadmi Party, with party leaders demanding swift arrests and enhanced protection for elected representatives at the grassroots level.

The incident has also reignited debate over rising gun violence in Punjab, especially targeting political figures. Analysts point out that attacks in public spaces such as weddings underscore the audacity of criminals and highlight gaps in preventive intelligence.

Security Concerns Ahead

Authorities said additional police deployment has been ordered in sensitive areas, and a review of security arrangements for political representatives is underway. Officials have assured that those responsible will be brought to justice and that the investigation is progressing rapidly.

As Punjab grapples with recurring incidents of targeted violence, the killing of Jarmal Singh during a public celebration stands out as a grim reminder of the fragile security environment and the urgent need for stronger enforcement measures.
