Punjab Police Denies Uniform Advisory, Calls Viral Message Fake Amid Political Row

Punjab Police has denied issuing any advisory directing personnel to avoid wearing uniforms while travelling to or from duty, calling messages circulating on social media fake. The clarification came after Opposition leaders shared an alleged circular and an unverified audio clip, triggering a political dispute over police safety and law and order.

The police said neither its headquarters nor any other Punjab Police office had issued such instructions and urged citizens and personnel to rely on official channels for authentic information. The alleged audio claimed that officers should travel in civilian clothes and avoid displaying items identifying them as police personnel.

The controversy followed the killing of Assistant Sub-Inspector Harjit Singh during patrol duty in Amritsar. Police said an investigation was underway, while a suspect in the case was later killed in an encounter.

Opposition leaders questioned the police denial and argued that the circulation of the alleged advisory reflected broader concerns about the safety of police personnel. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party, however, accused Opposition parties of spreading unverified information and said action could follow if anyone was found responsible for circulating false material.

Punjab Police’s position remains that no official uniform-related advisory was issued. The dispute has consequently shifted from the authenticity of the alleged message to wider political arguments over police security and the state’s law-and-order situation.
