CBSE Orders Schools to Share Class 11 Registration Numbers for JEE Main 2026 Applicants

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has directed all affiliated schools to share Class 11 registration numbers with students applying for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2026. The instruction comes after multiple complaints from students and parents that several schools had not issued the registration details required for completing the JEE form.

In an official circular, CBSE stated that the National Testing Agency (NTA) has made it compulsory for every JEE Main applicant to enter their Class 11 registration number on the application portal. This number is used to verify academic records and streamline coordination between schools and examination authorities.

Taking note of the issues reported since October 30, the Board clarified that schools “must invariably provide the Class 11 registration number to students appearing for the JEE Exam 2026.” The directive, issued by Joint Secretary (Coordination) Agarwal, instructs school heads to ensure immediate compliance so no candidate faces delays during registration.

JEE Main 2026 Application Schedule

The application window for Session 1 opened on October 31, 2025, and will close on November 27, 2025. The test city information will be released in early January, with results for the first session declared on February 12, 2026.

JEE Main 2026 will be held in two sessions:

  • Session 1: January 21–30, 2026

  • Session 2: April 1–10, 2026

The exam includes:

  • Paper 1 – for BE/BTech admissions

  • Paper 2 – for BArch and BPlanning programmes

Role of JEE Main in Engineering and Architecture Admissions

Paper 1 is the gateway for admission to undergraduate engineering programmes at NITs, IIITs, and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs), along with several participating universities.
Paper 2 is required for architecture and planning courses across India.

Additionally, JEE Main serves as the qualifying test for JEE Advanced, which governs admission to the IITs.

CBSE’s directive is expected to ease the registration concerns raised by students, ensuring a smoother application process for one of the country’s most competitive national entrance examinations.
