A tragic incident in Greater Noida has sparked serious questions over emergency response preparedness after a 27-year-old software engineer lost his life when his car plunged into a water-filled pit in Sector 150. The victim’s family has alleged that rescue efforts were delayed, claiming officials on the spot refused to enter the pit due to cold water and potential hazards, ultimately costing the young man his life.
The victim, Yuvraj Mehra, was travelling late at night when his vehicle reportedly fell into an uncovered and waterlogged pit amid dense fog conditions. According to family members, the accident occurred around midnight, but despite repeated attempts to seek help, timely rescue action was not carried out.
Yuvraj’s father, Rajkumar Mehra, said he reached the accident site in the early hours of Saturday after being alerted about the crash. He described extremely poor visibility at the location and said locating his son’s vehicle was a challenge. While repeatedly calling his son’s phone, he noticed a faint light after Yuvraj switched on his mobile torch from inside the submerged car.
Despite the presence of multiple emergency agencies, including the police, fire services, and the State Disaster Response Force, Rajkumar Mehra alleged that no official entered the pit to attempt a rescue. He claimed personnel cited freezing water temperatures and the risk of submerged iron rods as reasons for not entering the water.
According to the family, ropes were thrown into the pit, but these attempts proved ineffective. They believe that the absence of trained divers at the crucial moment significantly reduced the chances of survival. The father alleged that had expert divers been deployed promptly, his son might have been saved.
Eyewitness accounts further intensified concerns over the response. A local delivery agent, Moninder, stated that the victim remained alive for nearly two hours after the accident and pleaded for help. He claimed that despite the presence of emergency personnel, no decisive action was taken.
Moninder said he eventually took matters into his own hands after witnessing inaction at the site. He reportedly entered the pit himself after tying a rope around his waist and searched the water body for nearly 30 minutes. However, by the time he arrived, the victim had already drowned. He added that even several hours later, neither the vehicle nor the victim had been recovered.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage and renewed debate over urban safety and disaster preparedness in rapidly developing areas like Greater Noida. Questions are being raised about why the pit was left uncovered and inadequately marked, and whether emergency teams were sufficiently equipped to handle such situations.
Responding to the allegations, Rajiv Narayan Mishra, Additional Commissioner of Police, Noida, confirmed that an FIR has been registered based on the family’s complaint. He stated that visibility at the site was extremely poor and that all available efforts were made under challenging conditions. Authorities have assured that the matter is under investigation and that action will be taken against anyone found responsible.
As investigations continue, the tragedy has become a grim reminder of the urgent need for safer infrastructure, better hazard management, and faster, well-equipped emergency response systems to prevent such loss of life in the future.
