The Yusuf Pathan Vadodara plot dispute has taken a new turn after the Gujarat government proposed allotting a 978-square-metre municipal plot near the former cricketer's family home in Tandalja, Vadodara.
Under the proposal, 500 square metres would be gifted to Pathan, while the remaining 478 square metres would be offered at a concessional rate. The proposal is scheduled to be placed before the standing committee of the BJP-ruled Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) for approval on October 23, 2026.
According to the proposal submitted by the municipal commissioner, the remaining land would be priced at 55% of the rate fixed by the Vadodara Urban Development Authority Valuation Committee, representing a 45% concession.
The allotment would be subject to specific terms and conditions under a 2024 resolution of the Gujarat Urban Development and Urban Housing Department.
Plot Dispute Dates Back to 2012
Pathan has sought the land adjoining his family's home since 2012. The municipal corporation initially agreed to his request to purchase the plot, but the Gujarat government rejected the sale in 2014.
The dispute resurfaced in 2024 when the civic body issued a notice asking Pathan to remove an alleged encroachment and vacate the municipal land.
Pathan challenged the notice before the Gujarat High Court, arguing that the matter was more than a decade old and that the corporation should have sought his explanation before directing him to clear the alleged encroachment. He also argued that the land belonged to the municipal corporation rather than the state government.
The High Court upheld the state government's decision to reject his request. Pathan subsequently challenged the order before a two-judge bench.
In August 2026, the appeal was dismissed as withdrawn after his lawyer informed the court that Pathan was pursuing his claim under the state government's policy.
Political Developments Surround the Proposal
Pathan was elected to the Lok Sabha from West Bengal's Baharampur constituency in 2024 on a Trinamool Congress ticket.
The latest proposal comes after a reported political realignment involving Pathan and a group of TMC MPs who left the party and merged with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India, joining the NDA ranks in Parliament.
The timing has drawn attention to the proposed allotment, although the available information does not establish a direct link between Pathan's political move and the government's decision.
Final Approval Still Pending
The proposal is not yet final. The Vadodara Municipal Corporation's standing committee is expected to consider it on October 23.
If approved, the arrangement would provide Pathan with 500 square metres free of charge and the remaining 478 square metres at the proposed concessional rate.
