Uttar Pradesh's Mahila Udyami Credit Yojana aims to support rural women entrepreneurs through interest-free loans.

The Mahila Udyami Credit Yojana has been introduced by the Uttar Pradesh government to promote rural women's entrepreneurship and strengthen the state's economy. The scheme aims to benefit nearly one crore women associated with Self-Help Groups (SHGs) by providing interest-free loans of up to ₹1 lakh.

The initiative is intended to help women establish small businesses, expand existing enterprises and improve their financial independence. It also supports the broader objective of creating more Lakhpati Didis—women who earn sustainable incomes through entrepreneurial activities.

Mahila Udyami Credit Yojana: Key Features

The scheme aims to make credit more accessible to women who want to start or expand micro-enterprises.

Eligible beneficiaries can receive loans of up to ₹1 lakh without interest. The amount is divided into three instalments:

  1. First instalment: ₹20,000
  2. Second instalment: ₹30,000
  3. Third instalment: ₹50,000

The three instalments together total ₹1 lakh. Dedicated credit cards are also provided to facilitate access to funds and business transactions.

According to the scheme details provided, borrowers have up to three years to utilise the funds and repay the loan.

Who Is Eligible for the Scheme?

The initiative primarily targets rural women who are members of organised Self-Help Groups in Uttar Pradesh. The stated eligibility requirements include:

  1. SHG membership: Applicants must be active members of registered Self-Help Groups affiliated with the State Rural Livelihood Mission (SRLM).
  2. Uttar Pradesh domicile: Applicants must be permanent residents of the state.
  3. Business purpose: Funds must be used to establish a micro-enterprise or expand an existing household business.

Potential business activities include tailoring, handicrafts, pickle-making, small retail shops and dairy farming. These activities can help women turn existing skills into income-generating enterprises.

How Does It Differ From CM-YUVA?

The Mahila Udyami Credit Yojana complements the Mukhyamantri Yuva Udyami Vikas Abhiyan (CM-YUVA), another state initiative supporting entrepreneurship.

While the women's scheme focuses on SHG members seeking loans of up to ₹1 lakh, CM-YUVA provides eligible entrepreneurs with interest-free, collateral-free loans of up to ₹5 lakh for businesses in service and manufacturing sectors.

The programmes are designed to address different financing needs and expand access to institutional credit across the state.

Can the Scheme Strengthen Rural Women's Incomes?

Access to affordable credit can help rural women purchase raw materials, equipment and other essentials needed to run small businesses. However, the scheme's impact will depend on effective implementation, awareness among eligible beneficiaries and timely access to funds.

Business training, financial guidance and access to markets may also influence whether enterprises remain sustainable over time.

The initiative reflects Uttar Pradesh's broader effort to promote women-led development and strengthen rural livelihoods. Its long-term success will depend on whether the financial assistance translates into viable businesses, higher household incomes and greater economic independence.
