England captain Harry Kane has dismissed speculation of a dressing-room rift between manager Thomas Tuchel and the England squad, insisting the team remains united ahead of its blockbuster FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final against defending champions Argentina.
Rumours of tension emerged after England's dramatic 2-1 extra-time quarter-final victory over Norway, when Tuchel publicly criticised his side's performance despite the win. His remarks were followed by an emotional response from Jude Bellingham, prompting speculation about unrest within the camp.
However, Kane has made it clear that the reports are exaggerated and that the squad is fully behind its manager.
Speaking ahead of the semi-final, Kane said the players understood what Tuchel meant with his post-match criticism.
"Players know when they've played well and when they haven't. We understood what the boss meant. He's been very complimentary about us as a group."
The England skipper described Tuchel's management style as honest and direct rather than confrontational.
According to Kane, the German coach's straightforward approach is one of the reasons he is regarded among the world's best managers.
Kane also defended Jude Bellingham after the midfielder reacted emotionally following the Norway victory.
Bellingham had suggested Tuchel did not fully appreciate how difficult the conditions were after England played in intense heat.
Kane said such reactions are natural immediately after high-pressure matches.
"When you've just finished a game like that and someone asks you questions within minutes, emotions are still high."
He added that there was no conflict between the manager and the players.
Kane believes the speculation surrounding England is driven more by media narratives than reality.
He argued that attempts to create controversy often surface whenever England reach the latter stages of major tournaments.
"It's easy to try and create division. Maybe it's an English mentality, and the English media, to do that. But it's the complete opposite."
The striker stressed that England's success has been built on togetherness between players, coaches and support staff.
England will now turn their focus towards a massive semi-final clash against reigning world champions Argentina.
With Kane and Bellingham leading the attack and Tuchel overseeing preparations, England will hope to book a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.
The match is expected to be one of the biggest fixtures of the tournament, with both teams chasing a place in football's biggest stage.
Rumours emerged after Thomas Tuchel publicly criticised England's performance against Norway and Jude Bellingham responded emotionally after the match.
Harry Kane said the players understood Tuchel's comments and described him as an honest, direct manager who has the full support of the squad.
Kane defended Bellingham, saying emotional reactions immediately after difficult matches are completely normal.
