The International Cricket Council has rejected the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s request to relocate its matches from India during the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, sources familiar with the matter have indicated. The decision was communicated during internal discussions, with the ICC making it clear that the tournament schedule and host venues will remain unchanged.
According to sources, the global cricket body informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board that Bangladesh would be required to travel to India to participate in the tournament as scheduled. Any refusal to do so, the ICC reportedly warned, could lead to sporting consequences, including forfeiture of match points under tournament regulations.
While the ICC has conveyed its position during deliberations, officials within the BCB have indicated that no formal written communication has yet been received. However, sources said the message from the ICC was unambiguous and left little scope for a venue change at this stage of tournament planning.
The development comes amid escalating tensions between the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the BCB following the exit of Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League. Mustafizur was released by Kolkata Knight Riders after the BCCI advised franchises to part ways with him, citing evolving circumstances and security considerations.
The decision triggered a strong reaction in Bangladesh, where cricket administrators and government authorities raised concerns about the safety of Bangladeshi players travelling to India. In response, the BCB convened an emergency meeting and subsequently approached the ICC, requesting that Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup matches be shifted to a neutral venue outside India.
In its representation, the BCB cited security apprehensions and pointed to past precedents where teams have played ICC events under hybrid or neutral arrangements. BCB officials argued that similar flexibility should be extended to Bangladesh, especially in light of strained bilateral conditions and heightened political sensitivities.
The issue further intensified after Bangladesh imposed a ban on the broadcast and promotion of the IPL within the country, a move approved by authorities citing public interest. Senior BCB officials acknowledged that cricketing decisions had become entangled with wider geopolitical and domestic developments, complicating relations between the two boards.
Despite the request, ICC sources said there is little appetite within the governing body to alter tournament logistics at this late stage. India remains the designated host nation for the event, with venues finalised and commercial commitments already in place. Officials believe that reopening venue discussions could disrupt the tournament’s operational framework.
Meanwhile, Mustafizur Rahman has moved on from the controversy, signing with a franchise in the Pakistan Super League shortly after his IPL exit. His situation has become a flashpoint in the broader dispute, symbolising the growing strain between the two cricketing nations.
With the ICC holding firm on its stance, Bangladesh now faces a critical decision ahead of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Whether the BCB complies with the directive or seeks further recourse remains unclear, but officials indicated that continued non-participation could carry significant competitive consequences.
