IIT Mandi Orders Inquiry After Janmashtami Poster on Varna System Sparks Controversy

A controversy has erupted at IIT Mandi after a poster displayed during a Janmashtami celebration sparked debate over caste, social equality and the presentation of the traditional varna framework in an educational institution.

The poster, titled “Bhagavad Gita – The Timeless Wisdom”, was displayed during a Janmashtami event held on September 4. It included verses and references to the four varnas mentioned in the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita and described duties associated with Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras.

According to the poster, Brahmanas were described as having the responsibility to spread God's message, Kshatriyas to protect society and spirituality, and Vaishyas to contribute to the economy and support others. The description of Shudras as serving higher classes triggered particular criticism and concerns after images of the poster circulated on social media.

Students and others raised questions about the use of such descriptions on the campus of a premier educational institution, particularly in the context of social equality and India's history of caste discrimination.

IIT Mandi Director Professor Laxmidhar Behera said the poster had not been endorsed by the institute and announced an inquiry into how it was prepared and displayed.

In a communication shared with faculty and staff, Behera expressed concern over the poster and said an inquiry committee had been constituted to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. He also said the institute strongly condemns all forms of caste-based discrimination and remains committed to maintaining social harmony on campus.

The inquiry is expected to determine who prepared the poster, how it was displayed during the Janmashtami programme and whether it went through any formal institutional approval process.

The controversy has also prompted discussions among students and alumni about how religious and philosophical concepts should be presented in educational spaces, especially when they involve references to social categories and hierarchy.

The incident has revived a broader debate over the distinction and historical overlap between the traditional varna framework and India's caste system. Questions have also been raised about how such concepts can be discussed in academic and cultural settings without reinforcing discrimination or social hierarchy.

A faculty member associated with the Janmashtami celebrations has also become part of the wider discussion surrounding the event. However, the key focus of the inquiry remains the origin of the poster and the circumstances under which it was displayed.

IIT Mandi is expected to provide further clarity after the inquiry examines the matter. The institute's findings could also address concerns regarding approval procedures for material displayed during cultural and religious events on campus.
