IIT Faculty Bodies Back Doolla, Seek Due Process in Sahil Wakode Case

Faculty bodies from several IITs have backed Professor Suryanarayana Doolla and called for due process in the investigation into the death of IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode. The developments come as Wakode’s family alleges caste-based harassment, while the police probe into the circumstances surrounding his death continues.

IIT Bombay’s Board of Governors has asked Doolla to go on leave and formed a 10-member committee to examine the events leading to Wakode’s death. The panel, headed by IIT Palakkad Board of Governors chairman Professor Ramesh Venkateswaran, has been asked to submit its report within a week.

Faculty forums at IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras and other IITs have sought an impartial investigation. IIT Bombay Faculty Forum president Rajkumar Pant has said the institute’s SC/ST cell had no record of Wakode approaching it with a complaint in the months before his death.

Wakode’s parents have alleged that their son faced caste-based harassment and have sought action against Doolla and other institute officials. An IIT Bombay alumnus, Sudheendra Kulkarni, has separately called for withdrawal of the SC/ST Act case against Doolla and argued that the allegations should be examined through a full investigation. These claims and counterclaims remain under investigation.

Wakode died on September 18 after an incident during a mid-semester examination. The Crime Branch is examining CCTV footage, witness accounts and other evidence, while IIT Bombay’s internal committee is conducting a separate inquiry. No final finding has yet been established regarding the allegations or the circumstances that preceded his death.
