Shekhar Kapur Reunites With Jugal Hansraj for Masoom: The Next Generation, Original Cast Returns

More than four decades after Masoom became one of Indian cinema's most beloved family dramas, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur is bringing the story back with Masoom: The Next Generation. The upcoming spiritual sequel will reunite Kapur with actor Jugal Hansraj while also bringing back veteran actors Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi in their iconic roles.

The film aims to explore evolving family relationships, identity and emotional bonds across generations while preserving the emotional depth that made the original a timeless classic.

Jugal Hansraj Returns to the Film That Shaped His Career

Jugal Hansraj, who made his acting debut as child artist Rahul in the 1983 classic Masoom, described returning to the franchise as an emotional experience.

Recalling the moment Shekhar Kapur approached him for the sequel, Hansraj said he was delighted to return to a story that has remained an inseparable part of his identity for decades.

He shared that even after more than 40 years, people across the world still recognise him as "the Masoom boy" and often fondly remember the iconic song Lakdi Ki Kathi. According to the actor, audiences, including Indian families abroad, continue to associate him with the film, making the reunion especially meaningful.

Shekhar Kapur Calls the Reunion Emotional

Director Shekhar Kapur said welcoming Jugal Hansraj back into the Masoom universe felt like "coming home."

He reflected on watching Hansraj grow from a young child actor into an accomplished performer and said reuniting him with Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi carries emotional significance that goes beyond cinema.

Kapur added that he hopes the sequel retains the honesty, warmth and emotional truth that made the original film resonate with audiences for generations.

Star-Studded Cast Joins the Sequel

Apart from the returning trio of Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi and Jugal Hansraj, Masoom: The Next Generation will feature an impressive ensemble cast.

The film includes:

  • Manoj Bajpayee
  • Nithya Menen
  • Vivaan Shah
  • Kaveri Kapur

Academy Award-winning composer A.R. Rahman has also joined the project as both the music composer and co-producer, adding further anticipation to the film.

A New Chapter for a Timeless Classic

Unlike a direct continuation, Masoom: The Next Generation is being described as a spiritual sequel. The film will revisit themes of family, relationships and personal identity while adapting them to a contemporary setting.

The original Masoom, released in 1983, remains one of Indian cinema's most celebrated family dramas and introduced Jugal Hansraj as a child actor. With several original cast members returning and A.R. Rahman onboard, the sequel is expected to blend nostalgia with a fresh narrative for a new generation of viewers.
