India’s Affluent Consumer Base Could Quadruple by 2036, Overtake China: Report

India's consumer market could undergo a major transformation over the next decade, with the country's affluent consumer population projected to grow more than fourfold and potentially overtake China by 2036.

According to projections by NielsenIQ and World Data Lab, India is estimated to have around 2.6 crore affluent consumers in 2026. This number could rise to 10.8 crore by 2036, adding approximately 8.2 crore consumers to the affluent category over the next decade.

China, meanwhile, is projected to have around 10.3 crore affluent consumers by 2036, after adding approximately 6.2 crore consumers during the same period.

If these projections materialise, India would marginally surpass China in the number of people classified as affluent consumers.

What Does 'Affluent Consumer' Actually Mean?

The definition used in the report is important.

An affluent consumer is defined as someone who spends more than $90 per day. The classification is based on consumption expenditure and should not be confused with income, personal wealth or net worth.

In simple terms, the projection does not mean that India will have 10.8 crore “rich people” by 2036. Instead, it suggests that more than 10 crore Indians could cross the report's daily spending threshold.

India is also estimated to have around 64.9 crore core consumers in 2026. This category includes people whose daily spending falls between $13 and $90.

The projected expansion of both groups highlights the potential growth of India's overall consumption economy.

India Expected to Add More Affluent Consumers Than China

India is projected to record one of the largest increases in affluent consumers globally between 2026 and 2036.

The country could add around 8.2 crore affluent consumers, compared to China's projected increase of 6.2 crore.

By 2036, the United States is expected to remain the world's largest affluent consumer market, with approximately 23.1 crore people falling into the category.

Other projected affluent consumer populations include:

  • Germany: 3.2 crore
  • Japan: 3 crore
  • United Kingdom: 2.7 crore
  • Brazil: 2.3 crore

Globally, the affluent consumer population is projected to rise from around 65.7 crore in 2026 to 102.5 crore by 2036.

How Could India's Consumer Market Change?

India has traditionally been viewed as a major volume-driven consumer market, supported by its large population and expanding middle class.

However, the growth of consumers with greater spending power could gradually change how companies approach the Indian market.

While some categories may continue to grow through affordability, wider distribution and increased household participation, others could see stronger demand for premium products and services.

Consumers with higher spending power may increasingly spend on products offering better quality, convenience, experiences or aspirational value.

This could create significant opportunities for businesses operating in sectors such as retail, automobiles, consumer electronics, travel, financial services and premium FMCG products.

Higher Spending Does Not Mean Consumers Will Always Buy Premium

The report also highlights an important reality for companies targeting India's growing affluent population.

Higher purchasing power does not automatically translate into consumers choosing the most expensive option.

Among consumers categorised as “upgrade consumers”, 60% said value for money remained important, while 46% said they were willing to pay more for convenience.

This means Indian consumers could become wealthier while still remaining highly price-conscious.

Brands may therefore need to justify premium pricing through better quality, stronger brand value, convenience or a clearly superior product experience.

Simply launching an expensive product may not be enough to attract India's emerging affluent consumer base.

Affluent Consumers Could Drive Massive Global Spending

The influence of affluent consumers extends beyond their population size.

According to the projections, affluent consumers globally are expected to account for approximately $35.9 trillion in spending in 2026.

This is higher than the estimated $31.6 trillion spending by the much larger core-consumer population, which is projected to include around 410 crore people worldwide.

The numbers underline the growing importance of high-spending consumers for global businesses.

At the same time, consumer markets are also dealing with rising prices. NielsenIQ estimates that global FMCG prices increased by around 26% between 2021 and 2025.

What India's Growing Affluent Class Could Mean

For India, the projected rise from 2.6 crore affluent consumers in 2026 to 10.8 crore by 2036 could represent a significant shift in the country's consumption landscape.

A larger population with higher spending capacity could increase demand for premium products while also strengthening sectors built around discretionary spending.

However, the projections are based on existing data, historical patterns and economic assumptions. Changes in economic growth, inflation, employment, income distribution and consumer behaviour could affect the eventual outcome.

The key takeaway is that India’s consumer economy could look significantly different by 2036. If the projections hold, India may not only add millions of higher-spending consumers but could also surpass China in the size of its affluent consumer population.
