India’s Top Finance Billionaires: Uday Kotak, Kamath Brothers and Muthoot Family Lead Bloomberg List

India’s Top Finance Billionaires: Uday Kotak, Kamath Brothers and Muthoot Family Lead Bloomberg List

Bloomberg’s first India Finance Rich List has highlighted the growing wealth created by India’s expanding financial sector, identifying 15 individuals and families who have collectively built fortunes worth more than $65 billion.

The list reflects the transformation of India’s financial landscape, where traditional banking and lending businesses now operate alongside fast-growing brokerages, fintech platforms, digital lenders and wealth-management companies.

According to Bloomberg, seven of the 15 fortunes were significantly driven by the post-pandemic growth in retail credit and equity investing, while the remaining fortunes were built by long-established players in banking, lending and capital markets. The net-worth estimates are based on calculations from the Bloomberg Billionaires Index as of August 14.

Uday Kotak leads India’s finance billionaires

Uday Kotak tops Bloomberg’s India Finance Rich List with an estimated net worth of $16.4 billion.

Kotak began his journey in financial services in 1985 after raising a loan from friends and family to establish a bill-discounting and lending business. The company eventually evolved into Kotak Mahindra Bank after receiving a banking licence from the Reserve Bank of India in 2003.

Over the years, the group expanded into investment banking, mutual funds, wealth management and other financial services, making Kotak one of India’s most prominent financial entrepreneurs.

Muthoot family ranks second

George Alexander Muthoot and his family rank second on the list with an estimated fortune of $9.9 billion.

The family business traces its origins to Kerala and eventually developed into one of India’s largest gold-loan businesses. Muthoot Finance has expanded significantly in recent years and has also diversified into sectors including mortgages, information technology, energy, real estate, education, healthcare and hospitality.

Nithin and Nikhil Kamath among India’s richest finance entrepreneurs

Zerodha founders Nithin and Nikhil Kamath share the third position, with an estimated combined wealth of $9.9 billion.

The brothers built Zerodha into one of India’s largest retail brokerage platforms by offering a low-cost and technology-driven model. Founded in 2010, Zerodha benefited from the rapid expansion of retail participation in India’s stock markets.

The company’s client base reportedly grew from around 30,000 in 2013 to more than 17.5 million. While Nithin Kamath continues to lead Zerodha, Nikhil Kamath has expanded his interests into venture capital, asset management and other businesses.

Ajay Piramal and other major names

Ajay Piramal ranks fourth with an estimated net worth of $4.4 billion. His business empire expanded from textiles and pharmaceuticals into financial services and real estate. Piramal Finance grew significantly after expanding its retail lending operations and acquiring Dewan Housing Finance Corporation.

Motilal Oswal and Raamdeo Agrawal follow with an estimated combined fortune of $3.9 billion. Their business grew alongside India’s expanding equity markets and later diversified into asset management, lending, alternative investments and wealth management.

Sanjay and Alpana Dangi are also valued at around $3.9 billion. Their wealth is linked to investments, lending and the growth of Authum Investment and Infrastructure.

Sachin Bansal builds a second fortune in finance

Sachin Bansal, who first became wealthy as the co-founder of Flipkart, ranks seventh with an estimated fortune of $3 billion.

After Walmart acquired a controlling stake in Flipkart, Bansal moved into financial services through Navi. The company expanded from digital lending into payments, insurance and asset management.

Other names in Bloomberg’s top 10

Sanjay Agarwal, founder of AU Small Finance Bank, has an estimated fortune of $1.9 billion. The bank grew from financing businesses and vehicle purchases in rural and semi-urban markets into India’s largest small finance bank.

Rajesh Sharma ranks next with an estimated $1.8 billion fortune, built through Capri Global Capital and its expanding retail lending business.

Anand Rathi and his family complete the top 10 with an estimated wealth of $1.7 billion. The Anand Rathi Group operates across wealth management, investment banking, broking and lending.

India’s finance boom creates a new generation of billionaires

Bloomberg’s list demonstrates how India’s financial sector has created significant wealth across multiple areas, including banking, gold loans, retail lending, stock broking, wealth management, fintech and digital financial services.

The growth of retail investing and digital lending has created major opportunities for financial companies, particularly after the rapid increase in smartphone usage and digital access.

However, the expansion of India’s financial ecosystem has also raised concerns about rising household debt and losses suffered by retail investors involved in speculative trading.

Despite these challenges, the 15 individuals and families featured in Bloomberg’s India Finance Rich List collectively represent more than $65 billion in wealth, underlining the scale of India’s rapidly expanding financial-services industry and the growing influence of banking, investing, lending and fintech in creating the country’s newest generation of billionaires.
