Kidambi Srikanth Beats Victor Lai to Reach China Masters Quarter-finals

Kidambi Srikanth produced a vintage performance to defeat World No. 9 Victor Lai in straight games and advance to the quarter-finals of the China Masters in Shenzhen on September 3.

The veteran Indian shuttler defeated the Canadian 21-18, 21-19 in 43 minutes in the Round of 16, keeping India's men's singles campaign alive at the prestigious Super 750 tournament.

The victory was particularly significant for Srikanth as it marked his first win against a top-10 player this season. It was also his first appearance in the quarter-finals of a Super 500 tournament or higher this year.

The 33-year-old former World No. 1 displayed impressive control throughout the contest, particularly around the net. Srikanth used his experience to limit Lai's attacking opportunities and repeatedly turned defensive situations into attacking chances.

Srikanth faced a difficult start in the opening game and trailed 11-15. However, the Indian shuttler responded with a five-point burst to regain control before eventually taking the first game 21-18.

The second game was equally competitive. Srikanth initially struggled with the conditions and found himself trailing 10-14 before falling behind 15-18. Once again, he produced a strong comeback, closing the gap and winning the game 21-19 to seal the match in straight games.

The result came after Victor Lai had defeated Lakshya Sen earlier in the tournament. Srikanth's victory ensured that India's challenge in the men's singles competition remained alive.

Ranked 33rd in the world, Srikanth has endured a challenging season, with an equal number of wins and losses before the China Masters. However, he had shown signs of returning form when he reached the final of the US Open Super 300 in June.

The strong performance in Shenzhen could provide Srikanth with valuable confidence ahead of the Asian Games. Although he is not expected to compete in the individual singles event, his experience could prove important for India's chances in the team competition.

There was disappointment for India in the women's singles event, however, as 17-year-old Tanvi Sharma was knocked out in the second round by World No. 9 Tomoka Miyazaki.

Tanvi won the opening game 21-17 but eventually lost 21-18, 21-16 in the following two games in a match lasting one hour and six minutes. She had remained competitive throughout the contest but was unable to complete the upset.

Despite the defeat, Tanvi has enjoyed a breakthrough season, including her Taipei Open Super 300 title in July.

Her exit ended India's challenge in the women's singles competition after Unnati Hooda and Devika Shaig had also been eliminated earlier.

India also suffered a setback in mixed doubles, where Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto lost to Liu Kuang Heng and Hsu Yin-Hui in the pre-quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were scheduled to take the court later in the day against the Popov brothers in the men's doubles pre-quarter-finals as India's campaign continued at the China Masters.
