KL Rahul Becomes India’s Tone-Setter in Test Cricket

KL Rahul is emerging as India’s new tone-setter in Test cricket, stepping into the role once held by Rohit Sharma in white-ball formats. After solid performances in England and India A tours, Rahul once again impressed with a gritty fifty on Day 1 of the first Test against West Indies.

Since Rohit Sharma’s decline and eventual retirement from Tests, India needed a stabilizing opener alongside young southpaw Yashasvi Jaiswal. Rahul, having batted all over the order in past years, finally cemented his opening spot and has thrived in the role.

Rahul’s innings was characterised by patience, technical clarity, and smart shot selection. He respected the West Indies pacers early on before switching to offense once settled, finishing unbeaten on 53 runs. His current tally of 585 runs in 11 innings during the WTC 2025–27 cycle places him second only to captain Shubman Gill.

Former Indian wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel praised Rahul’s composure and responsibility, noting that he “shut down concerns about his form” and is now more settled in Tests. Similarly, ex-West Indies batter Daren Ganga called Rahul a “classical player,” highlighting his improved rhythm, tempo, and decision-making.

Rahul’s ability to find the right tempo, leave deliveries judiciously, and rotate strike effectively demonstrates his maturity. As India looks to assert dominance in the Test arena, Rahul’s role as the innings’ tone-setter is proving vital. A century in this series would mark his second hundred on Indian soil, the first being in 2016.

With role clarity and consistent performances, KL Rahul is shaping up to be a cornerstone of India’s Test batting for years to come.
