India’s shocking 0–2 home defeat to South Africa has sparked criticism from former cricketers, and one of the strongest voices has come from ex-captain Kris Srikkanth. After India suffered a crushing 408-run loss in the second Test in Guwahati—India’s heaviest defeat by runs in Test history—Srikkanth delivered a mix of humour and hard truth: perhaps India should stop playing at home.
India, once virtually unbeatable on home soil, have now lost five of their last seven Tests at home. Under head coach Gautam Gambhir, they have failed to win a single home Test series against a top side, losing to New Zealand and now South Africa.
Speaking on his YouTube show, Srikkanth said India's struggles are no longer limited to pace-friendly pitches.
“Now you’re getting caught on turning tracks and fast tracks. What do they want now? The Kolkata pitch was the one they asked for. Guwahati was a good batting wicket.”
Then came the jab:
“I have a brilliant idea. India should play all their Test matches in England.
There you get full stadiums; Indians can plan holidays and watch. And since India did well there, they will do well again.
No more home Tests in India.”
With Kohli, Rohit and Ashwin retiring from Test cricket, a younger squad led by Shubman Gill and coached by Gambhir is struggling to find consistency.
India managed a 2–2 draw in England and beat West Indies 2–0, but South Africa exposed serious weaknesses — especially India’s inability to play spin, ironically in their own conditions.
Not since the mid-1980s have India lost two home Test series in the same year.
Gambhir faced media criticism after the loss but defended himself by recalling past achievements such as the Champions Trophy and Asia Cup wins, along with India’s fight in England earlier this year.
Srikkanth was unimpressed:
“You must accept mistakes. Teams lose, that’s fine. But don’t refuse to accept flaws.”
He also questioned the decision-making structure:
“You removed Abhishek Nayar after the Australia tour. Then what is this performance? Who is accountable? He is treated like the king’s precious little one.”
India have slipped to No. 5 in the World Test Championship table, falling below Pakistan. They do not play another Test until August 2026, and their path ahead includes:
2 Tests in Sri Lanka
2 in New Zealand
5 at home vs Australia in 2027
If India continue on this trajectory, even WTC qualification may become unrealistic.
