Spain's teenage sensation Lamine Yamal celebrated his 19th birthday in style ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final against France, but it was his powerful message on unity and racism—not his diamond necklace—that became the biggest talking point.
The Barcelona winger arrived at the pre-match press conference in Dallas wearing a sparkling white gold and diamond necklace, revealing that it was a birthday gift he bought for himself.
"It's not a gift because I paid for it myself. A gift from me to me," Yamal joked.
However, the young forward quickly shifted attention to a much more serious issue when asked about recent political remarks surrounding France's multicultural national team.
The controversy followed comments by former Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who questioned the identity of France's national team because of its diverse ethnic backgrounds.
Yamal, whose father is Moroccan and mother is from Equatorial Guinea, avoided engaging in political debate and instead highlighted football's role in bringing people together.
"Football serves to unite people. France and Spain are examples of integration. That's what football is about—not discussing what someone else has said."
His response has been widely praised for promoting inclusivity and sportsmanship ahead of one of the biggest matches of the tournament.
Despite the enormous pressure of a World Cup semi-final, Yamal remained relaxed throughout the media interaction.
He revealed that he spent part of his birthday with his younger brother Keyne, who has become an unexpected fan favourite after repeatedly appearing on television broadcasts during Spain's matches.
Yamal laughed off his brother's growing popularity, saying he behaves exactly the same at home and simply enjoys having fun.
Although Yamal has scored just once during the tournament, the winger dismissed concerns over his goal tally.
He stressed that Spain's victories matter more than individual statistics and expressed hope of continuing the team's journey by reaching the World Cup final.
The teenager also reflected on how surreal it feels to be recognised by football fans across the United States during Spain's campaign.
Spain will face France in what many consider one of the most anticipated matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Yamal expects an evenly contested encounter between two attacking teams and believes fans are in for a thrilling contest.
With his maturity both on and off the pitch, the 19-year-old continues to establish himself as one of football's brightest young stars.
Lamine Yamal is trending after celebrating his birthday with a self-bought diamond necklace and delivering a powerful anti-racism message ahead of Spain's World Cup semi-final against France.
Yamal said football should unite people and described both Spain and France as examples of successful integration, refusing to engage in divisive political remarks.
The Spain winger revealed that he bought the diamond necklace himself as a birthday gift.
