The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has launched a free online Business Studies course for Class 12 students through the government’s e-learning platform, SWAYAM, under its ongoing digital education initiative.
The 24-week course, designed to align with the Class 12 NCERT Business Studies curriculum, began on September 22, 2025, and will continue until March 6, 2026. Enrolment for the course will remain open until February 20, 2026, allowing students ample time to register and begin learning at their own pace.
This initiative aims to strengthen conceptual understanding among students preparing for their Class 12 board examinations while promoting access to high-quality, free educational content nationwide. It also provides an opportunity for learners interested in management, business operations, and entrepreneurship to gain foundational insights into the corporate world.
The NCERT Business Studies course comprises 30 modules divided into eight major themes:
Nature and significance of management
Principles of management
Business environment
Planning
Organising
Staffing
Directing
Controlling
The modules are delivered through video lectures, downloadable documents, web links, and self-assessment exercises. Each lesson includes interactive elements and discussion forums, enabling learners to clarify doubts and engage with instructors.
The course is offered entirely in English and is classified as a core subject module. Upon completion of all lessons and the final examination, students will be awarded a certificate of completion issued jointly by NCERT and SWAYAM.
The online examination for the course is tentatively scheduled for March 3, 2026, though the date may be revised based on seat availability. Students’ performance will be evaluated through periodic assessments and their final exam results. Successful candidates will receive official certification, which can add value to academic portfolios and college applications.
The free Business Studies course is part of NCERT’s larger digital education strategy, expanding access to school-level Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) through the SWAYAM platform. As the national coordinator for MOOCs for Classes 9 to 12, NCERT’s goal is to bridge educational disparities and ensure equitable access to quality resources.
The council stated that subject experts and senior educators were involved in designing the course to help students build conceptual clarity, apply theoretical knowledge, and develop analytical skills essential for higher education and future careers.
Students can register directly through the SWAYAM portal (swayam.gov.in). After creating an account, they can access the full course content instantly and begin learning for free. The platform’s user-friendly interface allows learners to track progress, participate in quizzes, and revisit previous lessons anytime.
Officials at NCERT emphasized that such free, structured learning opportunities will help students across India prepare effectively for exams and gain practical understanding of modern business management principles.
The course also encourages self-paced study, enabling learners from all educational boards to strengthen their understanding of business concepts without financial barriers.
With growing digital literacy and government-backed platforms like SWAYAM, NCERT’s initiative marks another step toward building an inclusive, technology-enabled learning ecosystem for Indian students.
