After IAF Criticism, HAL to Deliver Two Tejas Mk-1A Jets by September; New 97-Jet Deal Likely

Months after Indian Air Force (IAF) chief Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh flagged delays in critical defence projects, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) is set to deliver two Tejas Mark-1A fighter jets to the IAF by the end of September, Defence Secretary RK Singh confirmed on Saturday.

Singh stated that a new deal for an additional 97 Tejas aircraft is expected soon, following the timely delivery of the first two jets under the existing contract. “Hopefully, the first two of those will be delivered with weapons integration by the end of September,” Singh said, as quoted by PTI.

The IAF had earlier expressed concerns over delays in Tejas production, largely attributed to GE Aerospace’s missed engine supply deadlines. Singh emphasized that HAL’s on-schedule delivery this time is crucial for future procurement plans.

The Tejas Mark-1A, a single-engine fighter, is intended to replace the ageing MiG-21 fleet and strengthen India’s indigenous defence capability. Currently, 38 Tejas jets are in service, with more under production. In February 2021, the government signed a ₹48,000 crore contract for 83 Tejas fighters. Singh indicated that HAL’s upcoming order book would secure production for the next four to five years.

Recently, the Defence Acquisition Council approved the procurement of an additional 97 Tejas jets at an estimated cost of ₹67,000 crore. Singh expressed confidence that the Tejas platform will evolve into a frontline fighter alongside the Sukhoi fleet.

However, he acknowledged persistent gaps in the IAF’s operational requirements. “There will still be a gap and for that gap we will have to look at some other options,” Singh added, hinting at possible alternative acquisitions.

The Tejas project remains a cornerstone of India’s strategy to enhance air combat capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. Successful integration of radar systems and indigenous weaponry is expected to significantly increase its combat potential.
