Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim acknowledged co-owner Jim Ratcliffe’s backing on Friday but stressed that long-term assurances do little to ease the immediate pressure to improve results at Old Trafford. Speaking ahead of United's Premier League fixture against Liverpool, Amorim highlighted that football’s unpredictable nature leaves no guarantees, regardless of ownership support.
Ratcliffe, who appointed Amorim last year, publicly reassured fans during the international break, stating the manager should be given the full three years of his contract to demonstrate impact. However, Amorim emphasised that such promises cannot substitute for short-term performance:
"It is really good to hear it. He tells me all the time, sometimes with a message after games - but you know, I know and Jim knows, football is not like that," he said. "The most important thing is the next game. Even with owners, you cannot control the next day in football."
United have struggled this season, with just 10 wins in 34 Premier League matches and no consecutive league victories. The team has yet to finish a round of fixtures higher than ninth, intensifying fan frustration. Despite Ratcliffe’s public support, Amorim remains under pressure as United prepare for a crucial clash at Anfield.
Chief executive Omar Berrada acknowledged that Amorim has taken longer to adapt to the Premier League following his move from Sporting than expected. Amorim stressed that the internal environment at Carrington training ground remains stable despite speculation about his future, and he holds both himself and his players to high standards:
"It's really good to hear because it helps our fans understand the leadership knows it's going to take time. But at the same moment, I don't like it because it gives a feeling that we have time to work things out. I don't want that feeling in our club. The pressure I put on the team or on myself is far bigger. In football, especially at big clubs, you need to prove yourself every weekend," he said.
With a demanding run of fixtures ahead, Amorim insists that immediate results remain the priority, reinforcing that backing from owners does not replace performance on the pitch.
