ITR Refund Status: Check Online & Reasons for Delay

For taxpayers who filed their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) before the deadline of September 16, 2025, many refunds have been credited, but some are still pending. Here’s how to check your refund status online and what may be causing delays.

How to Track ITR Refund Status Online

  1. Login to e-Filing Portal

    • Visit the Income Tax e-Filing portal and log in using your PAN and password.

    • Go to the section for filed returns to see if your ITR has been processed.

  2. Check Refund Status

    • Under Services → Know Your Refund Status, select the relevant assessment year to view the refund.

    • For refunds processed on or before March 31, 2023 (Assessment Year 2022–23 or earlier), check the NSDL/TIN portal with your PAN and assessment year.

Common Reasons for Refund Delays

  1. Outstanding Tax Demands

    • Refunds may be adjusted against pending tax dues from previous years.

    • To check, go to Pending Actions → Outstanding Demands on the e-Filing portal.

  2. Unvalidated Bank Accounts

    • Refunds are issued only to PAN-linked validated bank accounts.

    • Verify and update your bank details in your profile.

  3. Data Mismatches or Inactive Accounts

    • Small errors, like incorrect bank details or an inactive account, can delay refunds.

    • For older refunds, you may need to raise a refund reissue request through the portal.

Proactive Steps to Avoid Delays

  • Keep your bank details updated.

  • Respond promptly to any pending tax demands.

  • Regularly check your refund status online.

  • Seek assistance from a tax expert if your case is complex or unresolved.

Being proactive ensures your refund reaches your account without unnecessary delays.
