Assam to Distribute Zubeen Garg’s Ashes via Online Portal, Memorials Planned at Kamarkuchi and Jorhat

The Assam government has announced that the ashes of acclaimed singer Zubeen Garg will be distributed to organisations and individuals through a dedicated online portal. Memorials are also planned at Kamarkuchi, where Garg was cremated, and in Jorhat, the town where he spent his early years.

Authorities have confirmed that the Kamarkuchi cremation site will be secured immediately, with temporary barricades already in place and construction of a permanent boundary starting soon. Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Ranoj Pegu shared that the portal will allow institutions and organisations to apply systematically for Garg’s ashes, while individual requests will be considered once institutional needs are met.

A portion of the ashes will be taken to Jorhat for the rituals marking the 13th day after his death. A memorial is also planned at the site, with final details still being finalised. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma noted that the arrangement follows the wishes of Garg’s family, ensuring both memorials are accessible to the public.

Zubeen Garg, renowned for breaking regional barriers in music, passed away in Singapore on September 19, 2025, following a sea outing accident. The Assam government’s measures aim to honour his legacy while maintaining an organised and respectful distribution of his remains.
