Bangladesh Army Opens Fire on Hindu, Buddhist Protesters Over Temple Attacks and Rape Allegations

Atrocities against Hindu and Buddhist minorities in Bangladesh are escalating, with peaceful protests being met by deadly force. In Khagra, Chhari, members of these communities demonstrating against the alleged rape of a non-Muslim tribal schoolgirl faced gunfire from the Bangladeshi army.

The crackdown followed the local administration’s imposition of Section 144, which bans public gatherings. Despite the order, protesters defied the restrictions and called for a district-wide blockade to demand justice.

Reports indicate a troubling pattern of attacks since August 2024. At least 152 Hindu temples have been desecrated, 157 homes vandalized, and multiple cases of sexual abuse against Hindu women documented. Amid ongoing demonstrations, fresh reports of repression have emerged from Chattogram, highlighting a growing climate of fear for minority communities.

The protesters are demanding accountability from local authorities and justice for victims, but the response has intensified tensions, prompting national and international concern.
