Champions League: Van Dijk’s Last-Minute Header Seals Liverpool’s 3-2 Thriller Against Atletico

Liverpool opened their Champions League campaign in dramatic fashion with a 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid at Anfield, courtesy of a stoppage-time header from captain Virgil van Dijk. The late strike capped off a pulsating night that saw early dominance, a spirited Atletico comeback, and a fiery conclusion.

The Reds raced to a two-goal lead inside six minutes. Andy Robertson opened the scoring when a Mohamed Salah free-kick deflected off him past Jan Oblak. Moments later, Salah showcased his trademark brilliance, weaving through Atletico’s defense before slotting home Liverpool’s second.

Diego Simeone’s side, however, refused to surrender. Marcos Llorente struck just before halftime to narrow the deficit and then stunned Anfield with a deflected volley in the 81st minute to level the game. The equalizer evoked memories of his heroics at the same ground in 2020.

Liverpool, determined not to let points slip, found salvation in the 92nd minute when Van Dijk rose highest to head in from a corner, restoring the lead and sparking wild celebrations. Tensions boiled over as Simeone was sent off for a heated altercation with the home crowd.

Debutant Alexander Isak, Liverpool’s record £125 million signing, showed promise with early chances but failed to score. Still, the Reds’ attacking intent was clear, recording 20 shots compared to Atletico’s 10.

Elsewhere, Bayern Munich, under new coach Vincent Kompany, secured a 3-1 win over Chelsea. Harry Kane netted twice, joining Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar in an exclusive list of players with 20+ Champions League goals for two different clubs. Inter Milan also began with a 2-0 victory at Ajax, powered by Marcus Thuram’s brace from Hakan Calhanoglu corners.

Other notable results included Bodo/Glimt’s last-minute equalizer in a 2-2 draw against Slavia Prague and Olympiakos’ frustrating goalless draw at home against ten-man Pafos.

With drama, dominance, and decisive moments across Europe, the opening night of the Champions League group stage set the stage for a thrilling season ahead.
