Neeraj Chopra Qualifies for World Championships Javelin Final on First Attempt

India’s javelin sensation Neeraj Chopra made an emphatic start to his World Championships campaign, securing qualification for the men’s javelin final with a single throw at Tokyo’s National Stadium. Chopra surpassed the automatic qualification mark of 84.50m on his very first attempt, hurling the javelin to 84.85m and ensuring his place in the final without needing a second throw.

The Olympic champion, who won silver in Eugene in 2022 and gold in Budapest in 2023, arrived in Tokyo as one of the marquee athletes of the championships. Chopra faces strong competition from Germany, the Czech Republic, and arch-rival Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan, who will also be vying for a spot in the final.

Three other Indian throwers participated in the qualification round: Sachin Yadav in Group A, and Rohit Yadav and Yash Vir Singh in Group B. The men’s javelin final is scheduled for Thursday at 3:53 PM IST. Chopra aims to become only the third male javelin thrower in history to successfully defend a World Championships title.

Other notable competitors included Diamond League champion Julian Weber of Germany, 2012 Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott, Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Jakub Vadlejch, and Brazil’s Luiz da Silva.
