CJI BR Gavai Breaks Silence on Shoe Attack, Calls It a “Forgotten Chapter”

Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai on Thursday addressed the recent incident in which a lawyer attempted to throw a shoe at him inside the Supreme Court, calling it “a forgotten chapter.” Justice Gavai said he and his brother judge, Justice Vinod Chandran, were “very shocked” but chose to move on.

The remarks come after 71-year-old advocate Rakesh Kishore tried to target the Chief Justice during court proceedings, shouting “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge” while being restrained by security personnel. The shoe narrowly missed Justice Vinod Chandran, to whom Kishore later apologised, saying it was meant for CJI Gavai.

The attack appeared to stem from Gavai’s earlier remarks on the restoration of a Vishnu idol in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, which he later clarified were misrepresented.

Despite the disruption, the Chief Justice maintained composure, instructing court staff, “Don’t get distracted by all this. These things do not affect me. Continue with the hearing.” He also reviewed security arrangements in the courtroom afterward.

The incident drew widespread condemnation:

  • PM Narendra Modi called it a “reprehensible act” and praised Gavai’s composure.

  • Solicitor General Tushar Mehta called it “an attention-seeking stunt.”

  • Senior advocate Kapil Sibal and Rahul Gandhi denounced the attack as an affront to the judiciary.

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) terminated Kishore’s membership, while the Bar Council of India suspended his licence. Bengaluru Police filed a zero FIR against him for assaulting a public servant.

The Chief Justice’s measured response reflects the judiciary’s resilience and commitment to upholding the values of the Constitution despite unprecedented disruptions.
