Fugitive Indore Congress Councillor Accused of Funding ‘Love Jihad’ Conspiracy Surrenders in Court

Indore: After evading arrest for nearly two months, Congress councillor Anwar Qadri surrendered before a district court on Friday in connection with a high-profile ‘love jihad’ funding case. Disguised as a lawyer with a clean-shaven face, Qadri appeared in Court No. 14 before Judge Mini Gupta, where he was arrested by Ban Ganga police.

The councillor, wanted under the National Security Act (NSA) since July, is accused of financing a plot to lure Hindu women into marriages and allegedly push them into “immoral activities.” Police said co-accused Sahil Sheikh and Altaf Ali named Qadri as the financier during interrogation.

According to investigators, Qadri allegedly provided ₹3 lakh to the men — ₹2 lakh to Sahil and ₹1 lakh to Altaf — as part of the alleged conspiracy. He is also said to have met the accused at community gatherings.

The case emerged after two Hindu women lodged complaints at Ban Ganga police station, accusing the men of concealing their religious identities, establishing romantic relationships, and later sexually assaulting them.

Qadri’s surrender came just days before authorities were scheduled to seize his property on September 8. Police had placed a ₹40,000 reward on his arrest.

Following his surrender, Qadri was taken into custody, and an eight-day remand was granted for further investigation. Officials confirmed that two separate cases are registered against him under Ban Ganga police jurisdiction.

Notably, Qadri’s daughter was also arrested earlier in connection with the case, adding another twist to the ongoing investigation.
